Data, Cyber and Compliance Fundamentals: Incident Response

Our Senior Partner Clive Coleman will be speaking at an upcoming Law Society webinar examining how law firms can prepare for and respond effectively to cyberattacks.

Taking place on Thursday 10 September 2026 from 12.00pm to 1.00pm, the session will bring together Clive with Dan Tench, Partner at CMS, and Lisa McClory, Of Counsel at CMS.

Law firms are particularly exposed to cybercrime because of the highly sensitive information they hold and their reliance on digital systems to communicate with clients, counterparties and financial institutions. A successful attack can disrupt critical legal work, expose confidential data and result in significant legal, regulatory and reputational consequences.

The scale of the threat is considerable. The National Cyber Security Centre has reported that almost three-quarters of the UK’s top 100 law firms have experienced cyber incidents. Clear procedures and tested response plans are therefore essential to containing the immediate harm, meeting regulatory obligations and protecting client confidence.

The webinar will provide practical guidance on:

  • the principal cyber risks and incidents affecting legal professionals and firms
  • recognising the warning signs of a cyberattack
  • the immediate steps to take when an incident is identified
  • roles, responsibilities and escalation procedures during an attack
  • the key stages in operational and reputational recovery

The live online session is aimed at solicitors, in-house lawyers and practice managers. Attendees will also have the opportunity to put questions to the speakers about the risks and response challenges most relevant to their own practices.

Attendees may also complete an optional multiple-choice assessment to obtain a certificate of completion.
