We were asked to provide advice to The Sentencing Council shortly after cameras were first allowed limited access to selected courtrooms in England & Wales. As a matter of urgency, we had to provide training in how to present in front of a television camera.
We undertook role play with one judge in a very challenging interview environment. This involved setting up a simulated television studio and undertaking a probing and confrontational Q&A in the style of a hostile television interviewer. The judge was then robustly challenged on camera.
When the recording was played back showing her response to sustained aggressive questioning, the judge was shocked by her performance on screen.
With training, we quickly managed to develop her on-screen persona into being much more calm and confident.
