Tom Hayes and Carlo Palombo Supreme Court Victory – Press Conference

Thank you to all the press for attending yesterday’s press conference hosted by Sir David Davis MP, which we were proud to organise on behalf of Tom Hayes and Carlo Palombo relating to the Supreme Court judgment that overturned their convictions.

The panel also included Tom Hayes, his solicitor Karen Todner, Carlo Palombo and his solicitor Ben Rose.

David Davis summarised the result of the judgment by stating:

“I think today will be seen, as we go into the future, as an incredibly important day, not just for them, for Tom and Carlo, but also for the system. I think the judicial system needs a shake-up, and this is the latest demonstrator of it, and we will be returning to it in the future.”

Speaking at the conference, Hayes stated:

“I always believed that it would happen. I always had confidence it would happen.” He continued: “Today I’m learning how it feels to have won, and it’s an incredible feeling.”

Palombo described the experience as a “Kafkaesque nightmare” and a “crazy experience”, and that the attempts to convict them were based on “trying to get people convicted on abstract moral charges”.

Karen Todner, Tom’s solicitor, called for a public inquiry, stating that: “Tom has missed out on formative years with his son, time with his family, and the loss of his career and his home time, which he will never get back. The case highlights numerous problems with our criminal justice system, all of which I believe meet the criteria for a public inquiry.”

Speaking about the other traders that had been convicted Ben Rose, Carlo’s solicitor, stated: “My initial impression is that the ruling today opens the door to those seven securing a route by which they can have their convictions overturned. I can’t obviously promise that to them, but I think…I can see a path.”

The press conference was attended by all the major UK media, as well as international outlets, and was covered in more than 2,000 publications internationally.

As well as the press pack in the room, we also live-streamed the conference to other media and interested parties online.

Questions were raised about how this serious miscarriage of justice was allowed to happen, both by the SFO and the Court of Appeal. It has taken more than 10 years for justice to finally be done, and by the Supreme Court.

Maltin PR have acted for Tom Hayes pro bono since 2016.
